38 Now (A)after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a (B)secret one for (C)fear of the [a]Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (D)Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (E)bringing a [b]mixture of (F)myrrh and aloes, about a [c](G)hundred litras weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (H)bound it in (I)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a (J)new tomb (K)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (L)preparation, since the tomb was (M)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb

20 (N)Now on the first day of the week (O)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw (P)the stone already removed from the tomb. So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other (Q)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “(R)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” (S)So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; and he (T)stooped to look in, and *saw the (U)linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, and (V)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the (W)linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who (X)had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. For (Y)they did not yet understand the Scripture, (Z)that He must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again (AA)to their own homes.
